Lamb, Fish, and Buckwheat

Performance Diet

Navigating the realm of pet nutrition can be an intricate journey, especially when faced with conflicting information and controversies. Recently, the Purina Pro Challenges raised concerns, prompting me to embark on a thorough re-evaluation of various kibbles. Delving into reviews and scrutinizing ingredient lists, I found myself navigating a rabbit hole of information.

It’s confusing, even for us.  We are not nutritionist so much like you we rely on research and information online.  The results of numerous tests for the Purina came back clear.  I had lengthy conversations with my rep at Purina and we are confident that our puppies are safe whelping on Purina Pro Puppy.   We were also welcomed to join Petcuran (GO/Now) breeder program and until further notice, we will be incorporating both into the program to determine which our dogs do best on.

Having said that, I have always found Purina Pro to be a good match, I particularly like their new all stages performance formula.  It has been incredibly helpful to keep waiting on Tessa who is just a little metabolic machine.

My first recommendation whenever it is viable, is home cooked.  If you truly want to know what your pup/dog is eating, this is the only way.  For families with 1 dog, the cost compared to the increasing cost of quality kibble or pre-made raw is similar.

DO NOT GO ONLINE AND FOLLOW SOME FACEBOOK GROUP WHERE EVERYONE IS JUST MIXING WHATEVER THEY FEEL LIKE.  THESE ARE NOWHERE NEAR BALANCED, DO NOT INCLUDE NECESSARY VITAMINS AND MINERALS, AND WILL COST YOU SUBSTANTIALLY IN TERMS OF YOUR DOGS HEALTH.

DO NOT MODIFY BALANCED DIETS.  IF YOU DO, YOU NEED TO ENSURE THE SUBSTITUTIONS ARE THE SAME IN NUTRIENTS WHICH IS NEAR IMPOSSIBLE.

We have three diets that have been created for our program by a certified nutritionist.  Adult, Performance and Puppy.  You are welcome to use these.  If you find your dog is not a fan, you’re welcome to email me and I will provide you with multiple other protein options of diets that are balanced and from known sources (Dr. Becker, Hilary’s Blend)

GENERAL RECIPE INSTRUCTIONS

  • You may double or triple these recipes for ease of preparation. Prepare in whatever quantity suits you best.
  • Divide finished recipe into freezer containers or zip lock bags, in approximate daily portions and freeze each separately. Move one from the freezer to the refrigerator every evening to thaw.
  • Serve at body temperature, but be careful of microwave hot spots! It is best to warm the container in some hot water to avoid destroying the vitamins.
  • This recipe is completely balanced for adult and senior, dogs and cats. If you wish to combine this with a commercial food, you may do so in any combination. Since both the home-cooked and the commercial food are balanced, you may mix freely with no worry of unbalancing the diet.
  • Commercial diets are formulated to meet the lifelong nutritional needs of dogs or cats. Altering a recipe with substitutions or omissions changes the balance of the diet. This is also true for balanced home-cooked recipes. Balanced home-cooked diets can be used for the lifelong health of your dog or cat if no alterations are made. If you choose to prepare a balanced home-cooked diet for your pet, you should not change the components as you may affect your pet’s health.
  • Please do not include onions in pet foods. Garlic can be used for flavoring, provided it is used conservatively. Chocolate, grapes, avocados, macadamia nuts, and raisins are also toxic to dogs and cats as is xylitol.
  • Try to select organic where you can, but it is not necessary. Wash veggies and fruits thoroughly before use.
